Other Asterisms by Deborah Hesse
August 1 - September 7, 2025
Located in The Workshop Gallery, Building 3.
Opening Reception on Friday, August 1st from 3-6PM
Artist Talk on Friday, September 5th at 6PM
Regular Gallery Hours from 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Other Asterisms is a solo exhibition by Deborah Hesse featuring sculptural, light-responsive wall works made from industrial and everyday materials. Together, the pieces form a constellation—charting imagined links between the material and immaterial, the physical and virtual. Evoking underwater ecosystems, celestial maps, and microscopic life, these luminous, biomorphic forms blur boundaries and invite reflection on unseen systems beyond the known world.
Deborah Hesse is a multimedia artist and independent curator based in New Haven, CT. She holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of New Mexico, where she was a Tamarind Institute Fellow in Lithography. Her honors include a Connecticut Office of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and a Regional Project Initiative Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Hesse was an international artist-in-residence at the Hongti Art Center in Busan, South Korea, where she created a solo exhibition based on research into traditional seaweed cultivation. She has also received Rhode Island and Connecticut Visual Artist Sea Grant Awards, as well as artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, GreenWave, and Weir Farm Art Center. Her work has been shown internationally and nationally, with exhibitions in South Korea, New York, New Mexico, and Connecticut—including venues such as Real Art Ways, Housatonic Museum, University of Connecticut, Artspace, University of New Haven, Silvermine Art Gallery, and Governors Island Art Fair.
Full Artist Statement:
Other Asterisms features luminous, shaped, biomorphic wall works organically arrayed across the gallery. As a group, these abstractions evoke celestial constellations, bioluminescent aquatic forms, and microscopic life—confounding scale and seeking to make the immaterial visible.
This constellation of forms emerges through a layered process that blends digital fabrication with intuitive, material-based experimentation. I work with industrial byproducts—mainly sign- making materials—alongside birch wood, photo fragments, acrylic, and ink to create dimensional wall pieces that function as spatial paintings.
The initial shapes are inspired by natural forms and phenomena—seaweed pressings, fluid dynamics, the contours of spills—drawn from local specimens and debris gathered on daily walks. These fragments are translated into digital outlines and cut with a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine, then altered by hand with paint, adhesive color gels, and embedded imagery—merging precision with improvisation.
By combining fabricated and hand-altered materials, I explore how light, transparency, and surface interact to produce shifting forms and layered visual experiences. The planar, layered structures also reflect how digital life flattens and fragments information, reducing complexity into fleeting impressions.
These works probe the shifting boundary between physical and digital realities, drawing on the materials’ signage origins to question what is real, simulated, or invented. The process— manipulating synthetic materials into organic, responsive forms—reflects a broader interest in transformation, perception, and the increasingly fluid spaces we inhabit between tangible and virtual realms.
Together, the pieces form a kind of sensory map—linking the digital, natural, and constructed to explore connections between the infinite and the everyday.

"In the Spirit", paintings by Melody Asbury, are display at the Woodbury Public Library during the month of August. The show encompasses some of the dreams and visions that came to her in response to recent world events.
Melody has always loved and painted animals, eventually becoming a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists. In 2008, a dream of a white wolf standing quietly in her backyard caused her paintings to move in a new direction after discovering the wolf was her spirit animal. So often misunderstood and persecuted, Ms. Asbury endeavors to show the spirit and worth of wolves in the balance of nature. As a lover of horses, a vision of an Appaloosa led her to exploring war ponies and the markings the indigenous people have painted on them.

Hi everyone, I am working on prototyping my venture "Gleanings by the way" with the Connecticut Office for the Arts Evolve Cohort.
My project is to publish a primary source journal from 1849 with ties to CT that documents a trip from Newton NJ to Wisconsin and back.
I'd love to tell you all about it and hear what interests you the most!
My vision is to create and publish a book that incorporates illustrations with photos of the original document with transcribed text. It will include a map to help readers follow along the journey as well as tidbits about the locations & people visited along the way.
If you'd like to hear more and see some of my thumbnail sketches, join me for FB live next Wednesday, August 27th at 7pm.

Bethlehem artist and Arts Alliance of Woodbury President Marc Russell will show recent photographs at the Woodbury Public Library Gallery during the month of September.
The exhibit takes two directions in showcasing Mr. Russell’s photography. Landscape photographs made during visits to our National Parks are shown along with images created in the garden and the studio. Many of the photographs are made using 4x5 black and white film and printed by Mr.Russell in his darkroom and also featuring images from his Garlic and Mushroom series. Mr.Russell says, “Nature’s inspiration is boundless. Taking time to enjoy, examine and reflect often leads to new discoveries. His work comes from explorations while hiking and traveling as well as in the garden, where nature provides the colorful, varied and wonderful array of forms, patterns, shapes and textures.
Marc Russell holds an MFA degree from Brooklyn College with studies at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum, Pratt Institute and Maine Photo Workshops.

Small Worlds: The Art of Haiku with Amy Graver on Tuesday, September 9th from 7 to 8:30 pm.
Explore the power and precision of haiku in this 90-minute, hands-on workshop featuring traditional, modern, haibun, and linked forms. Through joyful discussion and creative exploration, participants will learn essential elements – seasonal imagery, line breaks, rhythm, and juxtaposition – while engaging in fun, generative writing exercises.

You’ll leave with several original haiku, new generative techniques, and a deeper appreciation for the small worlds that live in a single moment. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned writer, come ready to observe, imagine, and surprise yourself.

Is illness an obstacle, or an opportunity, for artistic creativity? How do artists with visual loss deal with their illness? How do visual changes affect an artist's work? In this conversation, Dr. Vincent de Luise will explore the visual impairments of several of the greatest artists in the western Canon - Euphronios, Rembrandt, Titian, Goya, Daumier, Degas, Cassatt, Monet, Georgia O’Keefe, Francis Bacon and Chuck Close. The talk will take a “Slow Look” at their works to see how they overcame their visual changes to create masterpieces.

Vincent is a clarinetist and is president of the Woodbury-based Connecticut Summer Opera Foundation.
