Description

EVERYDAY STORIES featuring the dynamic textile portraits of Clara Nartey will inhabit the Workshop Gallery at Ball & Socket Arts from Friday, June 28th to Sunday, August 18th.

The Workshop Gallery is located in Building 3 at Ball & Socket Arts. Gallery hours are: 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (with extended hours during special events).

Everyday Stories : This exhibit highlights the stories of everyday people through textile portraits. I want to tell the stories of spirituality, identity, joy, excellence, hard work and struggle which are as old as humanity itself. For example, there’s the story of Sissieretta Jones who was so excellent as a musician she received so many accolades but died in poverty. And there’s the story of the African American woman beautifully adorned and dressed up for church on Sunday morning briefly leaving behind the struggles and difficulties of the prior week. Our stories are multifaceted. They’re not all roses. And they’re not all thorns. They’re more like rosebushes - beautiful and thorny at the same time.

About the Artist

Clara Nartey is a Ghana-born artist based in the U.S. After earning a masters degree in business, Nartey went on to develop a rigorous self-taught art practice. Her unique artistic style meshes mark- making using threads, with digital painting, machine embroidery, and quilting.

Nartey’s bold, colorful, and textured works have been exhibited widely including at Heather Gaudio Fine Art, Yellowstone Art Museum, Visions Museum of Textile Arts, and Morris Museum. Her work is held in both private and institutional collections like that of Yale University and Dana Hall.
