Description

Join Marie Marie Difilippantonio, Director of the Jean and Julien Levy Foundation for the Arts and co-author of Julien Levy: The Man, His Gallery, His Legacy for a talk on Julian Levy and his contributions to the art world.

Julien Levy best remembered the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His New York City gallery (1931–1949) was generally regarded as the place to view cutting-edge contemporary art and the gallery highlighted work by artists Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Frida Kahlo, René Magritte, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy and Pavel Tchelitchew. Between 1931 and 1949, The Julien Levy Gallery also gave solo shows to 24 women while during that same period MoMA only had three solo female exhibitions. Works by Lee Miller, Frida Kahlo, Kay Sage, and Dorothea Tanning were among the artists represented by the gallery.

Julien Levy had a home in Bridgewater; Ms. Difilippantonio will talk about his time spent there and at the NYC gallery.  She will talk about Woodbury former residents Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage along with a brief mention of the other artists in the area who had exhibitions at the Julien Levy Gallery.
